Ontario Seeks More Skilled Foreign Workers

Ontario is experiencing a shortage of skilled workers and feels the need to look outside of the country for help.

The economic development minister, Vic Fedeli, says the growth of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program would help answer the job market needs of Ontario’s employers. Fedeli requested in a letter to Marco Mendicino, the new Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, for the number of nominations under the program to be increased to 13,300 from 7,000 over two years. By doubling the number of economic immigrants to the province, Ontario could deal with the skilled labor shortage.

Fedeli said the government program already has more applicants than allowed to enter the country and the demand is far outweighing the annual nominations. A spokesperson for Mendicino said the Canadian government has committed to increasing the spaces in the nominee programs by close to 27,000 spaces, allowing them to choose the economic newcomers that suit the labor market needs. The Municipal Nominee Program will help intensify the ability of the regions to find the talent needed to grow their economies.
